As if we need any more health reasons to drink red wine… but according to Vinepair.com, a study conducted by researchers at the University of Nebraska found that red wine actually burns fat. We can thank ellagic acid, found in grapes, for this, as it slows down the growth of existing fat cells and the formation of new ones, by boosting the metabolism (breakdown) of fatty acids in liver cells. So prost!
The article also refers to another study of over 220 type 2 (lifestyle associated) diabetes who regularly consumed a Mediterranean diet. It was found that those who drank a 150 ml glass of red wine had higher HDL (the good fat) levels than those who drank mineral water. And since HDL can help a body prevent strokes and heart attacks, the implications are hopeful.
