The story of Agricola

This racehorse with its melodic name was one of the first horses bred by Margaret de Wet, Freddie’s mother and Peter’s grandmother, after her husband Oscar died. This stunner won the annual championship show for yearlings held in conjunction with the Rand Easter Show in 1964 and fetched the highest bids. The sale of this remarkable horse was the beginning of Margaret’s breeding career and she became well-known as one of South Africa’s best female farmers.

To honour this horse, we dedicate the Excelsior Agricola Sauvignon Blanc to it. It comes from high altitude mountain vineyards in Robertson – the vineyards are as high as 400 metres above sea level. Its altitude means that these vineyards are decidedly cooler than the rest of Robertson and its low yields give flavour concentrated grapes, destined for a serious wine.
