This month we want to tell you about the story behind our Evanthius Cabernet Sauvignon.
Evanthius was another horse with a great character. He was a Hackney we imported from the Royal Stables in England. He won the Royal Hackney Show, as well as the New York Hackney Show. He had quite a temper, though, and on the boat ride over to South Africa in 1913 two people died from his kicks! His handler, Dick Pinter, accompanied him on the trip and, instead of returning to England, he stayed behind and ran the stud for the next 30 years.
We dedicate our 2010 Cabernet to this amazing cart horse. The grapes come from the oldest block on the farm, yielding savoury flavours, firm tannins and just a hint of jasmine. Here’s a tip – decant it and give it about 10 minutes before enjoying, for the flavours to really open up.
