We know about pencil shavings and sweaty saddles, but a wine that smells of tar or nail polish remover? Winefolly has rounded up a number of bizarre wine aromas recorded over the years.


Most we’ve heard of and even tasted, but some of the weirder ones are bubble gum and cola – could only be California, right? Californian Pinot Noir for the cola, to be exact, or Nothern Italy Schiava for the bubblegum. What they don’t feature is the fynbos typically picked up in some of the Western Cape’s white wines.
