Wacky Wine Runs

We loved the Wacky Wine Weekend earlier this month. Excelsior always gets very involved with a mini market and people coming from far and wide to bottle their own creation wine.
This year we were asked by Mountain Runner Events to take part in the Merrell Wacky Wine Runs. It started on Friday evening with the Wacky Wine Twilight Run. 78 runners headed out into the darkness, following luminous bunting that glowed bright under the power of the Black Diamond Headlamps. The flat 6km route wound through the vineyard lanes.

There were two events on Saturday. The Wacky Wine Trail Run was for seasoned runners and 79 people completed the 16km route that traversed four different wine estates including Excelsior.

The runners enjoyed a wonderful mix of vineyard tracks, vineyard lanes, orchard lanes and fynbos jeep tracks in the foothills surrounding the estates. It was a tough route that gave the runners the opportunity to experience the full array of tracks that the valley has to offer as well as climbing to get a spectacular view of the wine estates.

The second event was the Wacky Wine Vineyard Run/Walk which was aimed at less serious sportsmen. The idea was to get the people out to experience to true beauty of the vineyards while getting the opportunity to stop off and taste some great wines at the “Wine” Tables.

94 runners / walkers enjoyed an easy 7km route that took in two “wine” tables as they wound their way through vineyards and orchards.

The route passed through Excelsior Wine Estate, where the Excelsior staff were on hand to pour the runners/walkers a glass of their finest.  Some runners had more than their fair share!!
